Basic and Composition Techniques
This reading was very interesting. Although not too many of the topics were completely new to me, it was nice to be informed fully. Before I saw the exercise I thought of movies I had seen, specifically the more "artsy" films. Thus, I chose to watch Pulp Fiction as it is one of my favorite movies. This movie has numerous camera angles and interesting motions. For instance the camera doesn't follow Samuel L. jackson and John Travolta as they wait outside the apartment. By creating this distance, the audience is drawn to observe the characters more and their actions, communication, and mannerisms. Tarantino also loves feet and depicts them frequently. One very quick shot that depicts a drastic change in the camera height is when Travolta and Thurman are about to leave for dinner. For a a few frames you observe her feet as she makes a very feminine flip of her foot. Little things like this are what make the film so interesting. Finally, Jackson is depicted in a strong manner during the apartment scene. First when he and Travolta are standing outside the door there are a few shots that are at a long height aimed up at the two. This makes them look larger than life. When Jackson is making his Ezekiel 25:17 speech, the camera zooms in on his face for his final words. The effect is dramatic and builds a lot of tension before he completely unloads on Brett lol. There are more instances where Tarantino's camera skills are exhibited but those are a few strong ones.
